An Autistic Journey

Finding My Truth and Learning to Roar

"An Autistic Journey" is a deeply personal song that aims to offer insight into the experience of navigating the world as an autistic individual. It reflects on a lifetime of feeling different, often misunderstood, and the eventual journey towards self-acceptance and finding my own voice.

For much of my life, I encountered the feeling of being "out of sync" with neurotypical expectations. I was labeled "weird" or "rude" for behaviors and sensitivities that were simply part of how my brain processes the world. This song is about trying to bridge that gap in understanding and share my perspective.

"An Autistic Journey" is a song about seeking understanding, embracing neurodiversity, and finding the strength to roar your own truth in a world that often tries to silence or misinterpret those who don't fit the mold. It's a testament to the power of self-discovery and the importance of empathy and acceptance.

Key Lyrical Moments Explained: "An Autistic Journey"

"They called me weird… said I was rude… but they never tried to understand."

  • Explanation: This opening sets the stage for the entire song. It immediately highlights a common experience for autistic individuals: being judged and labeled based on behaviors that are often rooted in neurological differences, without any attempt to understand the underlying reasons.

"You say I’m dramatic when I say the light hurts my brain, You laugh when I tell you I can smell the rain. You don’t get how fabric makes my skin feel raw, And when you touch my things, it’s like breaking the law."

  • Explanation: These lines powerfully illustrate hypersensitivity, a core aspect of autism. Seemingly ordinary sensory input like light, smells, and textures can be intensely overwhelming or even painful for autistic individuals. The reaction to touch also highlights potential sensory sensitivities and the need for personal space. These experiences are often dismissed or misunderstood by neurotypical individuals.

"I say what I mean, and I mean what I say, But your words twist meanings, get lost in the grey."

  • Explanation: This speaks to the literal way many autistic individuals process language. Ambiguity, sarcasm, and implied meanings can be confusing and lead to misunderstandings in communication with neurotypical individuals who often rely on these nuances. The "grey" represents the unspoken and often confusing layers of neurotypical communication.

"You hide behind feelings, but I see the proof—Your brain bends reality. I speak the truth."

  • Explanation: This line touches on differences in emotional processing and perception. Autistic individuals may focus on objective facts and observable evidence ("the proof"), while neurotypical communication can be heavily influenced by expressed emotions, which may sometimes seem illogical or inconsistent to an autistic perspective ("Your brain bends reality"). The directness of "I speak the truth" again emphasizes literal communication.

"I see the patterns and I see your disguise, I know when you’re lying—I read it in your eyes."

  • Explanation: This highlights the often-heightened ability of autistic individuals to recognize patterns, not just in data but also in human behavior. Subtle inconsistencies in body language or spoken words that might be missed by neurotypical individuals can be very apparent, making it easier to detect insincerity ("disguise," "lying").

"Your fake emotions, your hollow small talk, It all feels so pointless—just empty blocks. I crave depth, I need truth, I won’t fake a laugh, So keep your surface-level—I’ll take my own path."

  • Explanation: This expresses the autistic preference for depth and authenticity in communication over superficial social interactions. "Hollow small talk" and "fake emotions" can feel meaningless and draining. The desire for "truth" aligns with the literal processing of information and a rejection of social pretense.

"It’s wild that your label becomes my relief, Your diagnosis gives me space to breathe. If that’s what it takes for me to exist—Fine. Stamp my file, I’ll clench my fists."

  • Explanation: This complex moment acknowledges the double-edged sword of diagnosis. While the label itself can be frustrating, the understanding and validation that comes with it can be a huge relief, providing a framework for understanding oneself and accessing support. The final lines express a determined acceptance of the label as a means of existing authentically, even if it comes with societal baggage.

"I was never broken. You just didn’t know how to see me."

  • Explanation: This powerful closing statement encapsulates the core message of the song. It reframes autism not as a deficit or something to be fixed, but as a different way of being and perceiving the world. The onus is shifted from the autistic individual to a society that often lacks the understanding and perspective to truly see and accept neurodiversity.
